1. Exploring the Mystique of Ancient Rome

Ancient Rome is an iconic region with an extensive and immensely complex history. From brilliant archeological sites to grandeur monuments highlighting Roman engineering, the ancient city is sure to leave one breathless. Here’s an exploration of some of the awe-inspiring places to explore in Ancient Rome.

  • The Colosseum: At the landmark location of the Coliseum, crowds of people enter the vast, open-aired arena, with its high walls, features and mysterious past. This grand arena may have seen the gladiators fighting their last fight, many centuries ago. It stands proudly at the center of modern Rome, its grandiose arches reminiscent of the past.
  • The Pantheon: Another quintessential example of ancient Roman architecture, the Pantheon is an intricate structure created from numerous levels of ornate masonry and detailed designs. Its impressive dome is the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome, one thereby void of pillars or beams. It’s most awe-inspiring feature, however, is the oculus at the top of the dome – a single hole in the ceiling, which is said to draw in the gods.
  • The Roman Forum: On the Campus Martius, the Roman Forum is an expansive area featuring the ruins of a cluster of ancient buildings. Buildings like the Senate House, the Temple of Saturn, and the Arch of Titus remain iconic symbols of the Roman Empire’s past. Many larger-than-life statues dot the ruins, arousing curiosity and fascination amongst visitors.
  • The catacombs of San Callisto: Hollown under the City of Rome, this underground burial site was established for the dead, in the 2nd century. The mysterious underground maze is riddled with graves, narrow corridors and monuments that speak to the past. Even today, scientists and archeologists explore the catacombs, looking for evidence of the ancient Roman civilization.
  • The Appian Way: This ancient road takes one directly from Rome to Brindisi, in Southern Italy. One of the most famous roads of Ancient Rome, the Appian Way first saw horse-drawn chariots in 312 B.C. And even though much of it is no more, visitors can still walk across the perfectly paved stones of the Appian Way, a quintessential relic of Ancient Rome.

Ancient Rome – its ruins, diverse history and array of activities – will be sure to leave one’s imagination soaring, and the mind filled with awe. Visitors to the region can explore the ancient city, searching for a glimpse of its royal past.
